Dense colonne di fumo oscurano il cielo della città sotto assedio. L’incendio divampa nell’accampamento imperiale: i soldati di Federico II di Svevia giacciono a terra massacrati senza pietà dai cittadini in rivolta. Mentre il fuoco distrugge ogni cosa e le tende vengono saccheggiate, il manoscritto sull’arte della falconeria scritto di pugno da Federico II scompare. Nove mesi più tardi, Federico delega al proprio vicario, Ezzelino da Romano, il compito di ritrovarlo. Non può permettere che vada perso per sempre. Non solo perché si tratta di un’opera dal valore inestimabile, arricchita da miniature preziose. Soprattutto perché quei fogli contengono dissertazioni che, diffuse nel momento sbagliato, potrebbero scatenare un’accusa di eresia e rompere l’equilibrio già precario con la Chiesa. Della missione è incaricato Gualdo da Margnano, fedele luogotenente di Ezzelino che, insieme con il giovane miniaturista francese Simone da Aix, raggiunge il castello di San Martino, dove forse è nascosto il trattato. While the fire destroys everything and the tents are ransacked, a manuscript on the art of falconry, written by Frederick II himself, disappears.
